This rare Chinese export porcelain cup and saucer, dating to circa 1790–1810, features a medallion portrait likely depicting Tsar Alexander I of Russia. The sitter’s attire—dark green garments, a blue sash, and a star-shaped medal—strongly suggests the Order of Saint Andrew, supporting this tentative identification.
While the exact source of the portrait remains unknown, it was likely inspired by contemporary European engravings or miniatures of the Tsar. Comparable images circulated widely in the early 19th century and may have served as models for Chinese decorators. The presence of Alexander I on Chinese export porcelain is highly unusual, as Russian commissions were rare. The piece may instead relate to a European commission, possibly commemorating diplomatic relations following the Treaty of Tilsit (1807).
