The mark present on the censer, Changchun jushi, is Emperor Qianlong's hall name given by his father Emperor Yongzheng in 1733. In both the composition and style, this mark is very similar to Qianlong's Changchun jushi seal, illustrated by Guo Fuxiang, Mingqing dihou xiyin (Emperor and Empress' Seals of Ming and Qing Dynasties), Beijing, 2002, p. 145. The censer was likely to be commissioned by Qianlong when he was Bao Qinwang (the crown prince Bao) during the Yongzheng period.

The four arts (四藝, siyi), or the four arts of the Chinese scholar, were the four main academic and artistic talents required of the aristocratic ancient Chinese scholar-gentleman. They were the mastery of the qin (the guqin, a stringed instrument, 琴), qi (the strategy game of Go, 棋), shu (Chinese calligraphy, 書) and hua (Chinese painting, 畫), and are also referred to by listing all four: 琴棋書畫; qínqíshūhuà. The plate in the middle depicts a harbour scene of cloth traders offering their merchandise to prospective buyers.
On the left a panel is inscribed AVP, relating to a cloth trader from Leiden, The Netherlands. The source for this design is an engraved copper plate in the Leiden Lakenhal museum, inventory nr. 11056 (link).
The central medallion is inscribed "Caro de Oro" and "Fabrica de Brusela" . The coat of arms depicted on the upper rim is that of Brussels, representing the archangel Michael slaying a black devil.

The accompanying text states:
The mancerina is closely associated with the Hispanic market and with the Spanish custom of chocolate drinking. Both chocolate and silver of course came from the Spanish New World, so it is fitting that this form was often made in silver as well as in Spanish maiolica. It is said that the 2nd Marqués de Mancera, Viceroy of New Spain 1664-1673, had a palsied hand and thus needed the all-in-one cupstand, which took his name, though none survive from this early period. Interestingly, a very similar form exists in Chinese ceramics of the Song period, which may have influenced the development of the export examples.
For a Mexican silver mancerina see H.R. Borrell et al, The Grandeur of Viceregal Mexico, p. 380. An almost identical single export mancerina is in the Museo Nacional de Historia, Mexico City, and illustrated by M. Priyadarshini, Chinese Porcelain in Colonial Mexico, p. 123.

The accompanying text by Jorge Rivas Pérez states:
This large Chinese famille rose mancerina decorated with flowers is a specialized item found in chocolate services. The mancerina is a deep, wide saucer, often in the shape of a seashell, with a cup holder in the center to hold the jícara (chocolate cup) in place and prevent it from tipping over. It was invented in Mexico in the mid-1600s and named after Don Antonio Sebastián Álvarez de Toledo Molina y Salazar, 2nd Marquis of Mancera, and Grandee of Spain (c. 1608 - 1715), a Spanish nobleman who was Viceroy of New Spain (Mexico) from 1664 to 1673.
Mancerinas became very fashionable across the Spanish empire during the colonial period and were manufactured in both silver and ceramic. In the 18th C., thanks to the trade with Asia via the Manila Galleon, porcelain mancerinas were also produced in China for the Mexican market. This example, a Qianlong period (1736-1795) famille rose mancerina decorated with flowers from circa 1760-70, is a representative type of the Asian export wares for the Spanish market.

Erotic art is an eminent part of the cultural heritage of ancient China, and was already flourishing in pre-Imperial times. With its peak during the late-Ming period, this art remained a fixed feature in Chinese literature and visual arts until well into the 20th century.
Chinese erotic art is a search for beauty in all its mani festations, for not only does it offer stimulation, it provides source of great aesthetic pleasure. It never presents sex in a crude or pornographical way, but within a framework of beauty and harmony, enhanced with details of a profound or symbolic nature.

The artist name 'Baiyun Shanren' (Hermit of the White Cloud Mountain) was however mistaken by both museums as 'Baishi Shanren' (Hermit of the White Stone Mountain). Although the aliases 'Baishi' and 'Baiyun Jushi' are both related to one of the earliest and most famous Cantonese enamellers, Tang Jintang (active in the first half of the 18th C.), they can also have been produced by Tang Jintang's studio. This rare box form may have been made for the Chinese market. The central roundel on the lid is of two facing cranes in flight, one carrying the sacred fungus, lingzhi, a pun for 'may the crane and the fungus extend your years.' The crane (he) is a symbol of immortality and high rank. The crane is also a pun for 'together.' Additional meanings are associated with cranes when seen with various flowers as depicted on this piece. (See Bartholomew, 2006, 5.6.1 and 7.13.2.)

The highly colourful, if somewhat rough, painting manner of this vase characterizes the earliest porcelains produced at non-imperial Jingdezhen kilns in this colouration, including the foreign rose-pink enamel. Soon after, the colour scheme was standardized to the famille rose palette, where the enamels were more subdued in tone. The form of this vase is also characteristic of these usarly pieces, done around the very end of the Kangxi (1623-1722) and the beginning of the Yongzheng (1722–1735) reign.
