The knob on the necks of these bottles makes them easy to grip, even with wet or greasy hands. The shape was developed in the Middle East, where people ate with their hands. The Chinese later made them in porcelain for export to the Middle East and Europe, where they were also used for washing. They are sometimes known as 'gugglets' because of the gurgling sound they make when pouring.
Provenance:
- The Stilte-stichting Landgoed Den Bosch, Leuvenheim, The Netherlands.
- Exhibited in the Museum Arnhem, with their inventory number BR 65. Included in the online 'Kunstcollectie' inventory on the website of the Stilte-stichting foundation.

Painted to the centre with a coat of arms of the Portuguese Coelho family, consisting of seven hares (coelho) and a lion, surrounded by two broad borders with dense embellishments.
The Brazilian-born António de Albuquerque Coelho (1682–1745), who as a mestizo held various administrative posts in the Portuguese colonial empire, most probably commissioned this plate to his father António de Albuquerque Coelho de Carvalho (1655– 1725) during his stay in Macao. His father was Governor General of Rio de Janeiro and Governor of Sao Paulo from 1709–1713, and Governor of Angola from 1722. The three existing services for members of the Coelho family differ in the number of rabbits (coelho) in the coat of arms. In the present dish there are seven hares in the coat of arms, which can be attributed to the plates owned by the father, while the coat of arms of the young António featured six hares and that of the brother four hares.

The emblem originates from the book of emblems titled "Idea de un principe politico cristiano" by the Spanish diplomat Diego de Saavedra Fajardo, printed first in 1642 and then reprinted and translated in several languages. The emblem here reminds that a ruler must remain vigilant even when he is resting. (link)

This bowl was not crafted for trade; instead, it is a historical commemorative piece created during the pivotal diplomatic mission to China that established the Nguyen Dynasty under its first king, Gia Long, in 1804. Commissioned in limited quantities, it served as a personal souvenir for the leader and members of the embassy, marking the importance of this mission in solidifying the dynasty’s early relations.
Provenance:
- The collection of Dr. Claus Vollers, German ambassador in Vietnam, 1981-84.
- The collection of Thomas Ulbrich, Studio Tho, Hanoi-Berlin, acquired from the above.
Ref.:
- Đồ sứ ký kiểu thời Nguyễn (Commissioned Patterned Porcelains In the Nguyễn Era), p. 117, where it is stated that only two of these specific dragon bowl seem to exist, of which only one is outside Vietnam (which is this bowl). (see added image)
- Only very few pieces with this year mark are recorded, for example: Đồ sứ ký kiểu đời Gia Long. Museum Huế (link) and one with Giáp Tý mark in the collection of Vương Hồng Sển (museum in Saigon) (link)
- Tự Vị tiếng nói miền Nam (Dictionary of the Southern Language) by Vương Hồng Sển, Nhà Xuất bản Trẻ (Youth Publishing House), Hochiminh City, 1998 pp: 411-412, where it is stated (translated):
Lê Quang Định (1760 - 1815), birth name Tri Chỉ, penname Tấn Trai, from Phú Vang province (Thừa Thiên), went to the South (of Vietnam, today HCM/ Saigon) to study with Võ Trường Toản, befriended with Ngô Thanh Tịnh and Trịnh Hoài Đức who all three were known as the Gia Định's Trio;
He followed Lord Nguyễn Ánh (by later dynastic name GIA LONG ) and achieved many feats, gained many positions and titles, leaded a delegation with participation of Lê Chánh Lộ , Lê Gia Cát to Qing-dynasty China. (Source according to Lê Thọ Xuân in the Year Book of the Association for Study Promotion in 1942).
Following this first official delegation to China (1803) was a second delegation soon after and lead by 'diplomatic' envoy Trịnh Hoài Đức in year Giáp Tý (1804). In return to these two diplomatic envoy delegations from Vietnam, the Guangxi's Surveillance Commissioner Tề Bố Sâm (齊 布 森), who carried out diplomatic duties for the Qing government under emperor Jiaqing (顒琰), bestowed the Vietnamese requested investiture for Lord Nguyễn Ánh by an official document (Sắc phong, chin.: 册封) which was accompanied by a present - a tea set with the mark Giáp Tý / Niên Chế.
- Interpretation by Mr. Ulbrich: The porcelain group of bowls and teasets with the base mark Giáp Tí 甲子 1804) were ordered to be manufactured by the Chinese mandarin Tề Bố Sâm, chin. 齐布森 , who was in charge of the foreign supervision and diplomatic exchanges with the southern border neighbours. The Vietnamese delegation mandarins had been sent to China and requested officially, to acknowledge the new Vietnamese leader-in-power, Nguyễn Phúc Ánh (阮福暎) , as new king of their country. Two delegations were sent from Vietnam, and the Chinese side finally came to the conclusion, to bestow the new Vietnamese ruler with the title of 'king of Vietnam', not with title 'emperor' - equal to the Chinese emperors title - as requested by the Vietnamese side. The porcelain selected or ordered by the Chinese side along with the installment document, is considered as a kind of present to the new vietnamese 'king'.
The date mark Giáp Tí 甲子 commemorates this political event - the founding year of the newly established Nguyen Dynasty and the proclamation of its first ruler Nguyễn Ánh (阮映) , who took the dynastic name 'Gia Long' after proclamation and enthronement. The specific design ordered and manufactured by the Chinese side as a diplomatic gift for the Vietnamese, represents and expresses the diplomatic controversy of the new Vietnamese ruler's title 'emperor' or 'king': A dragon with four claws.

The sweeping crest rail gracefully ends in outswept hooks above horseshoe-shaped arms, forming an elegant curve over the splat, which is intricately carved in high relief with mountainous landscapes. The reverse of the splat is inscribed with a poem by Zhang Dai (1597–1624), accompanied by an artist's seal.
Above the seat framework, four tuosai panels are adorned with plum blossom and bamboo motifs. The rectangular rattan seat is supported by four elaborately carved legs with makara-shaped feet, raised on an open-framed footrest. Surrounding the seat are four intricately carved panels, featuring the Three Friends of Winter, while the front panel depicts Zhang Dai in seclusion, accompanied by two attendants. Each corner of the front panel is fitted with metal loop mounts for carriage bars.
Inscription on the back (銘文):天明晨寒偕二童子隨行,其一抱琴,其一執壺至江邊。山水青綠江風景盛,舟少人稀飲氣之清畫江之謐,似與天地合而為一,此自達之意深為吾想。張岱。
Translation: At dawn, in the chill of morning, I set out with two young attendants—one cradling a qin, the other bearing an ewer—toward the river’s edge. The landscape, awash in vivid greens and blues, thrived beneath the gentle river breeze. With few boats on the water and scarcely a traveler in sight, the air felt pure, and the river exuded a profound tranquility, as if blending seamlessly with heaven and earth. This perfect union of nature and spirit echoes deeply within my soul. — Zhang Dai
A jianyu 肩輿 (sedan chair) was commonly used by the emperors, princes and nobles as transport for short journeys between buildings in the great palaces. According to the Mirror of Craftsmanship and Guidelines by Lu Ban, Chinese sedan chairs come in different types, this particular one is called a Yajiao shi.
Zhang Dai (1597-1624) was a famous late Ming dynasty historian and writer, he was born to a noble family and well educated with poetic aesthetic tastes, however he never passed the Imperial examinations to serve the Ming court, his hometown was destroyed with the fall of the Ming dynasty. Reluctant to serve the invader, he decided to live in seclusion with his two attendants, one depicting holding a qin, and the other an ewer, which is explained in the poem.

Alfred Daguet was a French metalworker and artist, renowned for his intricate Art Nouveau designs in repoussé; a technique where metal is shaped from the reverse side to create raised patterns. Daguet's mirrors, crafted primarily in copper and bronze, are celebrated for their ornamental, nature-inspired frames, often featuring motifs like flowing vines, mythical creatures and delicate flowers. His work, blending craftsmanship and artistry, turned everyday objects like mirrors into unique decorative pieces, capturing the elegance and fluidity of the early 20th century Art Nouveau movement.

Painted after 'Mercury and Argus', an oil painting on canvas executed ca. 1620 by the Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens. It is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon.
An engraving by Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert may have served as example for the painter of this plaque.
The painting depicts a scene from the myth of Mercury, Argus (Argos) and Io as told in' The Metamorphoses' written by Ovid (I, 583 ; IX, 687).
In the story Jupiter (Zeus) has fallen in love with Io, a priestess of Hera, his wife, who quickly discovers the affair. Jupiter transforms himself into a bull and transforms Io into a beautiful, white heifer in order to hide from Hera's wrath. Hera sees through this scheme and demands the heifer as a present. To end their affair, Hera puts Io under the guard of the giant Argus Panoptes, who has 100 eyes. Jupiter commands his son Mercury (Hermes) to set Io free by lulling Argus to sleep with an enchanted flute. Mercury, disguised as a shepherd, is invited by Argus to his camp. Mercury charms him with lullabies and then cuts his head off.
Jordaens depicts in the picture the moment when Mercury stealthily picks up his sword to murder the sleeping Argus. The protagonists of the fable are not shown in their divine condition. He has turned Argus into a tired and shaggy old man who does not have 100 eyes and has lost his frightening aspect. Mercury is a simple shepherd with dirty feet who has just numbed Argus' vigilance by playing a flute which is lying on the ground.
