An important early travel account describing the Dutch East India Company’s embassy to China (1655–1657), led by Pieter de Goyer and Jacob de Keyser. Nieuhof, who accompanied the mission as steward, provides one of the earliest and most detailed Western descriptions of Chinese court life, architecture, landscapes, and customs.
Illustrated with copper engravings based on the author’s drawings, the work profoundly influenced Europe’s perception of China and became a key source for chinoiserie design. This Antwerp edition, printed by Michiel Cnobbaert shortly after the Amsterdam original of 1665, closely follows the first while featuring re-engraved plates and local typographical differences.
