- Chengde architectural figure. First built as a cool summer retreat in 1703 for the Kangxi emperor (ruled 1662-1722), the Palace at Chengde was substantially extended by the Qianlong emperor (ruled 1736-1795). It took a total of 89 years to complete. The mountain resort encompasses 72 scenic spots from all over China, and includes many different architectural styles and landscapes. This stoneware figure, glazed in amber, green and turquoise, was collected from Chengde in the 1800s. It has a detachable head, which can be set at an angle to be viewed from below. The knob on the necks of these bottles makes them easy to grip, even with wet or greasy hands. The shape was developed in the Middle East, where people ate with their hands. The Chinese later made them in porcelain for export to the Middle East and Europe, where they were also used for washing. They are sometimes known as 'gugglets' because of the gurgling sound they make when pouring.

The print source for this design was identified by Mr. W. Motley in 2019. The image is from an engraving of Autumn from The Seasons by Johann Georg Hertel of circa 1750, based on four gouaches by Johann Esaias Nilson (1721-1788). Two others from the series, Spring and Summer are also found on Chinese export items. The unusual rococo border decoration on the plates is also found framing the prints.
The design however is clearly based on the fashion in the eighteenth century for a genre of painting, fetes galantes, popularized by artists like Watteau and Lancret, in which many figures populate an idyllic pastoral landscape and enjoying music, reading or picnics. (Source: Mr. W. Motley)

This part of a Chinese porcelain service from the Compagnie des Indes includes a coffee pot, a teapot, a bowl, a large biscuit dish, a very large sugar bowl, and two cups with their saucers. This order dates to the end of the Qianlong period, around 1790, and bears the arms of the La Motte-Baracé family: "Argent, a sable lion surrounded by four merlettes of the same, charged in the center with an escutcheon argent with a gules fess, flory of six pieces."
The Maltese cross in the background allows for a precise dating of the commission, as it could only be displayed on a coat of arms by bailiffs, commanders, and grand crosses, meaning between 1786 and 1789.
The external garland, characteristic of late decorations from 1785-1790, subtly reflects the restrained lines of the neoclassical style, as seen on the coolers from the Rolland du Roscoat service (Lebel, p.181). In contrast, the arms are rendered in a rococo style, offering a rich composition supported by lions with human-like expressions. A banner crowning the entire piece bears the motto: Lenitatis fortitudo comes (Strength is the companion of gentleness).
The La Motte-Baracé family, known since the 13th century, originates from Anjou. Divided into two branches, the elder (de Senonnes) remained in Anjou, while the younger (de Coudray-Montpensier) moved to Touraine. Jean de La Motte Baracé (1568-1637) took part in the siege of Amiens in 1597. He became lord of Senonnes in 1624. The Château de Senonnes is located in Anjou, south of Mayenne. It remained in this family until 1757, when it was sold by Pierre-Louis de La Motte-Baracé (1708-1758), captain in King Louis XV's regiment.
Philippe-Claude-René, Count of La Motte-Baracé, was a lieutenant-colonel of cavalry in the Crussol regiment, knight of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis, and lieutenant of the marshals of France. He was the great-nephew of Henri de Valliere, who, having no descendants, bequeathed him the Château du Coudray-Montpensier, a massive medieval estate whose initial construction was undertaken by the Bournan family.
Alexandre de La Motte-Baracé was cited by the explorer Louis-Antoine de Bougainville as 'chevalier de Bournand,' a title borrowed from the former lords of this estate. From the younger branch, known as de Coudray-Montpensier, Alexandre was born in 1736. He was the son of Philippe-Claude-René de La Motte-Baracé, who married Catherine Guillot de La Bardoullière on December 17, 1731, in Cuon (Anjou).
According to the annals of the Academic Society of Nantes published in 1896, young Alexandre, only four years old, was received as a knight of the Order of Malta on January 15, 1740. In his work "History of the Order of the Knights of Malta" (Paris, 1819), Abbé de Vertot mentions this practice inherent to the knights of Malta: "...for about a century, knights have been appointed as minors or even at birth: a very recent practice that the ambition of fathers and mothers for their children's advancement has made very common, and of which we will briefly report the origin."
Thus, Alexandre, carried by his parents' ambition, benefited from this privilege newly granted to very young knights. His youth at Coudray-Montpensier, an immense estate on the borders of Anjou, Poitou, and Touraine, was undoubtedly influenced by the presence of a father whose military career was highly successful. However, his choice to join the Royal Navy led him towards another destiny.
In 1753, at the age of seventeen, he joined the Marine Guards (John Dunmore, Storms and Dreams, 2008, p. 272). The Marine Guards register described him as "tall, well-built, with a noble air, well-educated. He knows geometry well, has devoted himself to the study of physics, excels in all aspects of the profession, and is adept at naval maneuvers. A distinguished subject: he is proficient in the English language."
On May 23, 1754, he was appointed ensign and joined the Lys. According to Dunmore, he was taken prisoner by Admiral Boscawen's squadron just before the Seven Years' War. Imprisoned in England, he was later released on parole and sent to serve in the Mediterranean with the Knights of Malta, whose main function was to protect the island from Turkish offensives.
He became an adjunct member of the Royal Academy of Marine on August 29, 1754.
On November 1, 1756, he was appointed second lieutenant of artillery at the beginning of the Seven Years' War. This major conflict in European history, the first that could be described as a "world war," lasted from 1756 to 1763 and was the setting for his first battles.
From April 1 to November 11, 1756, he served on the ship Foudroyant in Barrin de La Galissonnière's squadron and participated in the Battle of Minorca (May 20, 1756), won against Admiral Byng's English fleet.
In its inadequate efforts to support Canada's defensive positions, reinforcements were sent to assist the colony. From April 15 to December 26, 1757, he served on the ship Superbe in Du Bois de La Motte's squadron, tasked with aiding Louisbourg, Canada. He took part in defending the fort against the English Vice-Admiral Holburne's attacks (August 19-20 and September 16-26, 1757).
Departing from Brest in the spring of 1756, Louis-Antoine de Bougainville had joined Canada with the troops of the Marquis de Montcalm. This future explorer, not yet a naval officer, would soon cross paths with Alexandre de La Motte-Baracé.

Based on the engraving 'Danae' by the French engraver Gaspard Duchange, after the painting by Antonio Allegri da Correggio (1531). (see added images)
'The painting depicts the Greek mythological figure Danae, daughter of Acrisius, king of Argos, who is visited by Jupiter, who has been transformed into a shower of gold, which Cupid collects from among the sheets. As a result of this union, Perseus was born. On the right side of the painting, at the foot of the bed, two amoretti, holding an arrow, use a touchstone to test the endurance of love, which risks being corrupted by tact with gold. It is said that the building visible through the window is the unfurnished residence of Federico II Gonzaga at Marmirolo, near Mantua. A small landscape outside the window and the sunset, the beauty of which is enveloped in the woman’s room, the tranquility of colors convey the divine light that is about to appear with the arrival of the main god and illuminate Danae. The tender body of the latter and the whiteness of the sheets indicate that the beauty will soon fly away to the heavenly spaces.'

In 1734, the Dutch East India Company commissioned Cornelis Pronk to produce designs for a set of China plates. This porcelain, so-called Chine de commande, was produced in China, then shipped to Europe and sold there. Pronk made four different designs, of which 'The Parasol Ladies' or 'Dames au Parasol' was the most popular. The Dutch East India Company ended the deal in 1740 because the production and shipping from China proved too costly. The original watercolour for the design is now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (link). The design was quickly adopted on Japanese porcelain.

The Henegouw dish is part of a collection of territorial armorial dishes and barber's bowls that feature coats of arms from various Dutch, English, Flemish and French provinces and cities. These dishes, likely privately commissioned, were decorated with specific heraldic symbols. The dishes are circular, with a central coat of arms, often surmounted by a crown or bonnet, and a scroll beneath the shield displaying the territory's name. The Henegouw dish is one of many in this set, representing the historical regions of the Low Countries.

Literature:
David Sanctuary Howard, "Chinese Porcelain of the Jacobites," Country Life, January 25, 1973
The 'Scotsmen' or 'Highlanders' decoration counts as one of the most important and iconic imageries seen on Chinese export art. The figures in the centre depict a piper and a private from the 42nd Regiment of Foot, a predecessor to the famous Black Watch. The source print of the piper is discussed by David Sanctuary Howard, 'Chinese Porcelain of the Jacobites - I', Country Life, January 25, 1973. Howard notes that the piper was taken from an engraving by George Brickham and published on A short history of the Highland Regiment, London, 1743; and the private was also after a drawing by Brickham of the same date. Members of the regiment deserted the Stuart cause, and on July 18, 1743, Privates Samuel, Farquar Shaw, Malcolm McPherson were executed at the Tower for the mutiny, and a Piper Macdonnel was sent to Georgia, USA, as a convict. These men were seen as Jacobite martyrs, and memorialized on plates and punch bowls bearing these figures.
Chinese export punch bowls depicting the 'Scotsmen' pattern are extremely rare, and the two figures are also seen in plates, such as the following lot. According to David Howard and John Ayers, China for the West, London, 1978, Vol. I, cat. no. 234, pp 239-240, when discussing a plate bearing the same figures, that at least twenty plates are known, and most showing little to no signs of wear, most likely because they were probably hidden and never used upon the return from China. Five or more punch bowls are known, and some show signs of use. One example, formerly in the collection of J. Jefferson and Anne Weiler Miller, sold at Christie's New York, January 21, 2016, lot 100.

The dish depicts the arms of Pelgrom and are attributed to Jacob Pelgrom (1655-1713) who was a French Huguenot who fled to the Netherlands in 1688 and then on to the Dutch East Indies where he worked his way up the bureaucracy at the VOC eventually becoming Director of Begal by the time of his death.

The shape of this dish and painted 'gadrooning' on its lip, resemble those of silver salvers used to hold wine goblets. The tiled floor depicted is particularly reminiscent of delftware, suggesting the dish was meant for the Dutch market. The scene most likely derives from an engraving by David Teniers.

18th century (1700-1720) Mechelen gold leather
Determination of leather condition.
The acidity of the leather was pH 2.8 and was determined using ammonia gas increased to 3.5.
The fat content has been increased to 4.8%. Furthermore, the leather has been treated with Sorbitol.
The restoration
The tears and holes have been repaired with vegetable tanned calf leather, which has been coloured with the BASF paint system. The gold leather has been stretched on furniture board using an elastic material (lycra), so that the leather can work freely. The whole is finished with calf leather glued corner profile. The restoration was carried out in June/July 1977 by the 'Maatschap voor het Restaureren en Conserveren van Goudleer', Hoge Nieuwstraat 27B, The Hague.
An example of this gold leather can be found in the book 'Spanish Leather' by John W. Waterer, see 'Plate 44'.

Jean Bouchaud (1891–1977) is a French painter known for his ethnographic portraits. The painting bears an inscription in Chinese identifying the sitter as “Abbot Monk Liao Ran 了然 of Qiongzhu Temple 筇竹寺” on the upper right, Bouchaud’s signature on the lower left, and the location and date, “Yun Nan Fou 1925” (Kunming, 1925), also noted on the right. This rare portrayal of a Buddhist leader serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a historical document of early 20th-century China.
Qiongzhu Temple, also known as the Bamboo Temple 筇竹寺, is a historic Buddhist temple located on Yu'an Mountain 玉案山 northwest of Kunming, Yunnan, China. The temple's name, Qiongzhu, refers to a specific type of bamboo (Qiongzhuea genus). Originally established during the Yuan dynasty, Qiongzhu Temple was the first Zen Buddhist temple in Yunnan. Over the centuries, it has been destroyed by fire and rebuilt multiple times. The current structure primarily dates back to the late Qing dynasty.
