David Howard & John Ayers — China for the West: Chinese Porcelain and Other Decorative Arts for Export Illustrated from the Mottahedeh Collection

China for the West by David Sanctuary Howard and John Ayers is the definitive two-volume study of Chinese export art from the 16th through the 19th centuries, compiled and illustrated from the renowned Mottahedeh Collection. First published in London and New York by Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications in 1978, this monumental work remains a cornerstone reference for collectors, scholars, and connoisseurs of Chinese export porcelain and decorative arts.

Presented in a folio format with original cloth-bound hardcovers, illustrated dust jackets, and issued in its slipcase, the set encompasses approximately 704 pages across both volumes, richly illustrated throughout with some 103 colour plates and numerous black-and-white illustrations that bring to life the breadth and variety of export wares made for Western markets.

The work is organized to survey not only the principal porcelain styles but also decorative motifs and the complex dialogues between Chinese craftsmen and their Western clientele. It includes extensive cataloguing of forms, decorative subjects, and attributions, together with a comprehensive bibliography and index, making it an indispensable tool for research and connoisseurship.
