描述
Dia.: 14,4 cm
Provenance:
- The Geoffrey Middle Collection, UK.
This inscribed Canton famille rose service forms part of a rare group of mid-19th-century Chinese export porcelains bearing personalised English inscriptions. Each piece is inscribed on a reserved band: “Dr. D. Young. With Tang Kah Sheong’s best compliments.”
A related saucer from the same service is illustrated by David Sanctuary Howard (vol. II, p. 685), who compares it to a similarly inscribed blue and white service presented to Dr. G. H. B. Wright, both likely gifts from grateful patients.
Ref.:
- Christie's New York, 24 January 2012, lot 66 for a closely related example but with scalopped rim, together with a sugar bowl. (link)
- The Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, USA, museum number E83597.ab for a near identical saucer with cup.
