Description
The figure is modelled seated on a plinth, wearing an official’s cap and a long robe loosely painted in underglaze blue. His right hand rests at the waist, while the left falls naturally across the knee. The decoration is simple and restrained, in keeping with late Ming blue-and-white porcelain figures.
Wenchang Dijun, also known as the God of Literature, is the deity associated with learning, civil examinations and scholarly achievement. From the Ming dynasty onwards, he was widely revered by scholars and was commonly depicted in the attire of a civil official.
