Description
Finely potted with gently rounded sides rising from a neatly finished foot ring, the bowl is painted in underglaze blue on the exterior with a continuous scrolling floral vine interrupted by four lozenge-shaped panels formed by overlapping squares, each enclosing one of the auspicious characters fu, shou, kang and ning (福壽康寧), together conveying the blessing “good fortune, longevity, health and peace.” The interior is centred with a lotus medallion enclosed by concentric circles, beneath a broad band of cockscomb scroll and a narrow cell-diaper border at the rim.
The base bears the unusual four-character cyclical inscription dingsi nian zao (丁巳年造, “made in the dingsi year”), corresponding to 1617 during the reign of the Wanli Emperor (1573–1620).
