Description
A blue and white Kraak plate with the characteristic panelled decoration, painted in soft and vibrant tones of underglaze cobalt blue. This example is finely painted, yet also executed with a more spontaneous brushwork. The central decoration depicts a bird resting on rockwork among flowering plants, with another bird in flight above and a dragonfly perched on a sprig near its beak. The rim is divided into eight large panels with alternating flowering plants and insects, interspersed with smaller panels filled with diamond and dot motifs. The reverse is similarly divided, with cartouches decorated with alternating lingzhi and insects, separated by stylised cloud motifs. The centre bears an egret mark with a slightly open beak. The footrim shows minor typical kiln grit.
