Of elegant double-gourd form, the vase is finely painted in underglaze cobalt blue with the popular subject of Wen Wang Fang Xian (King Wen Seeking Worthies). King Wen of Zhou is depicted travelling with attendants through a landscape setting in search of talented advisers, while the upper gourd is decorated with a scholar and attendant amidst garden scenery. The figures are depicted with animated expressions and flowing robes amongst pine trees, rockwork and flowing water. The upper section is painted with two characteristic stylised tulip motifs, interspersed with auspicious symbols.
